The program will include some basics on being a S.M.A.R.T. angler, as well as how to rig a fishing rod, types of bait, knot tying, rules and regulations, casting practice, hands-on fishing, and more. Fishing license not required for program.

Monarch butterflies are amazing creatures. Join the park naturalist at the McDanel's Launch Pavilion #7 to participate in a program about these beautiful insects. We will talk about the features of monarchs and their survival techniques. The program will include a short hike to explore nearby monarch butterfly habitat.

Star Gazing Party8:30 PM - 10:30 PM
The night sky holds many mysterious and magical sights. Join the park naturalist and members of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh (AAAP) for a hands-on star gazing party at the bike rental station on the North Shore. AAAP will have several telescopes to try out. Bring a blanket, chairs, snacks and plan for a great night at Moraine.

Historic Oil Well Operation10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Come and see the abandoned turn of the century oil well and pumping engine that have been restored to working order. The well will operate from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. The central powerhouse site is located beyond the Forestry & Regional office building on Park Rd. (Old 422) off of route 528.

Regatta at Lake ArthurPleasant Valley Area/South Shore
The Regatta at Lake Arthur is an annual 2-day event featuring entertainment, canoe and kayak races, children's activities, fishing tournament, hot air balloons, Moraine Marketplace, hiking, swimming, sailboat races, historic oil well demonstrations, fishing for kids, kid's clinic and more. Add in fireworks over the lake on a Saturday night dinner cruise, and you have a weekend event that's "Naturally Fun". A number of local food vendors are always there in the mix to keep everyone fed with a variety of summertime festival fare.
The Nautical Nature will be running short mini cruises from the south shore on the hour from 10:00 until 4:00 both days.
At McDanel's Launch free activities include a kid's fishing derby Saturday at 11:00. Johnathan Fennell, a graduate of Art Institute of Pittsburgh, will be doing caricatures 11:00 on Sunday. Owl pellet dissectiontakes place at 1:00, Walk on the Butterfly Trail at 2:00, and Make a litter bug at 3:00. Other activities take place throughout the day. Join us on the North shore to complete your Regatta experience.

Experience the peace and tranquility that can be yours floating on Lake Arthur. This entry-level kayaking program is designed to meet the needs of those more interested in an easy peaceful experience rather than a long hard paddle. Meet the park naturalist at the Old 422 launch area off of old Route 422/Park Road to learn about and experience the peace and beauty that Moraine has to offer. Participants may bring their own kayak, or borrow one of Moraine’s kayaks. To reserve a kayak or to register, call the park office at 724-368-8811. Participants that use park kayaks must be at least 12 years of age. An adult must accompany those participants that are under the age of 18. Bring drinking water.

Explore the Source10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Several streams flow in to create Lake Arthur. Join the park naturalist at the upper 528-boat launch, which is located off of Route 528, for a kayaking tour to explore the largest of these streams – Muddy Creek. This is a moderately strenuous kayaking experience. Participants may bring their own kayak, or borrow one of Moraine’s kayaks. To reserve a kayak or to register, call the park office at 724-368-8811. Participants that use park kayaks must be at least 12 years of age. An adult must accompany those participants that are under the age of 18. Bring drinking water. There are no facilities at this boat launch so participants should arrive ready to get out on the water. Bring plenty of water to drink.

Become a citizen scientist! Monarch butterflies make an amazing migration each year that allows the species to continue its survival. Meet the park naturalist and members of the Wissahickon Nature Club at McDanel’s Launch, Pavilion # 7 on the North Shore to learn about this wonder of nature and to try to tag some Monarchs. We will provide tags and tagging datasheets. Bring a butterfly net and join in this fun and educational experience.

The park takes on an entirely different character at night Kayaking at night opens up your senses to a new way of experiencing the lake. Combine the two during an evening paddle on Lake Arthur. This trip is designed for intermediate paddlers. Meet the park naturalist at the Old 422 launch area off of old Route 422/Park Road to learn about and experience the peace and beauty that Moraine has to offer. Participants may bring their own kayak, or borrow one of Moraine’s kayaks. To reserve a kayak or to register, call the park office at 724-368-8811. Please be sure to dress for the weather conditions and bring drinking water. Kayaking at night requires a white light source, such as a flashlight. Park kayaks will have a light provided.
